The Story of Oysters R Us: Our Garden Route Journey
It all began with an escape from the city and a deep love for the ocean’s finest delicacy. Back in 2009, while my business partner Natalie and I were working corporate jobs in Johannesburg, we made a life-changing decision: we bought a farm in the beautiful Wilderness.
I took the leap first, moving down in 2010. But it wasn’t long before fate intervened. The pivotal moment came when I met our neighbour, Hein, who was shucking and selling fresh oysters at the local farmers’ market every Saturday. I had always loved eating oysters and eagerly offered to assist him.
Every Saturday became a ritual, and a lightbulb moment struck: “Why don’t I open my own little rustic oyster bar?” The farm, located perfectly on the N2—halfway between Wilderness and Sedgefield—was the ideal stop for travelers exploring the Garden Route.
So, on December 1st, 2012, we proudly opened the doors of Oysters R Us to the public. Today, what started as a passion project has grown into one of the top Wilderness restaurants and the premier destination for Garden Route oysters.

Our commitment begins with quality. We source our premium-grade Pacific Oyster from the West Coast of South Africa, known for its deliciously sweeter, cleaner taste. We maintain a firm commitment to sourcing sustainably, partnering only with reputable farms. At Oysters R Us, my personal pride is in guaranteeing the FRESHNESS of every oyster. This quality is all thanks to a system I personally designed: an expertly engineered seawater tank system that uses temperature control and UV sterilization to ensure every oyster is at its absolute best when it reaches your table.
